Buckeye nitrate removal cartridges utilize a specialty ion exchange resin to remove nitrates. Nitrates are sometimes present in groundwater in rural areas, and are thought to result from fertilizer laden runoff; leaking septic tanks, sewage; and erosion of certain natural deposits. The Maximum Contaminant Level set by the US EPA in 1992 is 10 mg/L or 10 ppm. This level has remained unchanged in more recent regulatory reviews. The limit is especially important for infants up to six months of age.
Competing ions should be accounted for when estimating capacity, and feedwater and treated water nitrate levels should be monitored to ensure adequate removal. Consider pretreatment with reverse osmosis to significantly extend the useful life of the cartridge. Do not use with water that is microbiologically unsafe or with water of unknown quality without adequate disinfection before or after the system.
